Floor sanding to refurbish your home

It can be overwhelming when trying to think of ways to renovate your home. From a new lick of paint to floor sanding, we’ve got plenty of ideas to give your house a new life! Keep reading to get inspired…

Choose your ideal aesthetic

The first step to renovating your home should be to work out whether there’s a certain aesthetic you want to achieve. This could be different for every room or a consistent theme running throughout the house. For example, you could achieve a beach theme through whitewashed floors, pale blue walls and distressed or rattan furniture. Once you’ve chosen the look you’d like to create, you can decide how to achieve this through various decor and refurbishment processes.

Choose new paint or wallpaper for each room

Of course, it’s a good idea to start with the walls and floors before you move on to furnishings. That is unless you have already purchased furniture – in this case, you can choose the walls and floors to complement your furniture. If you want to draw more attention to your decor, it could be a good idea to choose simple or pale paint such as white or light grey. This will allow you to add splashes of colour through pictures, ornaments and other decorations without the worry of them clashing with the walls. If you do want a statement wall, you could choose a more vibrant paint colour or even use wallpaper to achieve this. It’s amazing what a lick of paint can do to transform a space!

Complete floor sanding to restore your current flooring

The next step you could take towards renovating your home is refurbishing your hardwood flooring. Wooden floor restoration can be achieved through floor sanding. This process strips back the surface of the wood, removing any scratches or imperfections that may have appeared over years of wear and tear. Floor sanding is also a great option if you want to change the appearance of your existing hardwood floor, rather than replacing the floor altogether. You can change the appearance of your floor by choosing different stains to change the colour of the wood. These stains include:

Natural wood, Victorian pine, antique pine, walnut, teak, black, light/medium/dark/golden oak, rosewood or whitewash (lightens the wood).

You could also choose a different finish for the wood. For example, if you had a gloss finish before you could choose a matte or natural finish. Varnishing the wood can help to bring out the natural grain of the wood, as well as protect the surface of the wood for years to come.

Alternatives to floor sanding

If you don’t want to carry out floor sanding on your existing hardwood floor, or you don’t currently have hardwood floors, you might want to consider having a new hardwood floor installed. At RYANS, we offer a range of different styles and finishes to create your perfect floor. The style you choose will create a different vibe, so it’s important to consider your different options before making a decision.

Parquet Flooring

If you’re looking to create a statement with your hardwood flooring, you might want to consider parquet flooring. The most popular style of parquet flooring is herringbone. Herringbone is a geometric pattern created using angled staves of wood. This detailed pattern adds a sense of classic elegance to any home, as well as makes the space look larger.

Plank Flooring

Plank floors are more common than parquet flooring, especially in modern homes. The simplistic look works with almost any choice of decor, creating a clean look that doesn’t subtract from the choice of furnishings and decorative features. You could choose from standard, wide plank, or 2-strip flooring. Wide plank flooring can create a luxurious look, showing off the natural grain of the wood the most of the three options. 2-strip flooring is made up of short staves of wood, in two rows per floorboard. This is often the cheaper option, if budget is a concern, and creates a more expressive floor.

Once you’ve chosen your style of floor, you can choose the stain and finish of the wood. If you’re unsure about which stain to choose, we can provide samples on your floor to see how it looks! This will help you make a more confident decision.

Choose the new decor for your space

Finally, you might want to consider investing in new furniture, paintings and other decorative features for your home. This will help to tie everything together and create a more cosy vibe. Whether or not you take a minimalistic approach, the decor is essential!
