Sanding and refinishing your wooden floor

Thinking about renovating your home? Sanding and refinishing floors can bring a new life to any room! At RYANS, we have an expert team who specialises in hardwood floor sanding. Keep reading to learn more about what to expect when having your wooden floors refurbished.

What is floor sanding?

Floor sanding is a restoration process used on hardwood floors. It removes the top coating of the wood using a sanding machine, as well as a thin layer of the wood if necessary. This will remove any imperfections in the wood, including scratches and dents caused by years of wear and tear. Every floor will lose its shine over time, so floor sanding and refinishing can be the perfect solution. It can also be a great option if you’d like to update the look of your hardwood floor. You can choose a new stain and finish to complement your home.

Things to consider when sanding and refinishing floors

Ready to have your wooden floor refurbished? There are some things you might want to consider before starting your project. Read on to learn more.

Be realistic

Floor sanding can create an incredible transformation for your hardwood floors, but it’s important to be realistic. Sanding and refinishing floors is a manual process, and wood is a natural product, so the results will never be perfect. There are knots in the wood, as well as inconsistencies in colour and grain. Of course, this is part of the wood’s natural beauty and you likely embrace it, but it’s something to bear in mind.

With very old flooring or flooring that hasn’t been installed well, sanding can improve the cosmetic look. With that said, they won’t look as good as new. Floor sanding also can’t solve problems such as gaps in the wood – again, the floor will look better, but not perfect. Extremely old floors will have a naturally more rustic look, which could be something to embrace! Many people would pay good money for that worn/antique aesthetic.

Prepare for dust

At RYANS, we use top-quality dust-extraction equipment to minimise the amount of dust in your home. With that said, there’s no way of making the process completely dust-free. Most of the dust will be taken care of, so it’s nothing to worry about. However, you might want to think about covering furniture with plastic if you want to protect it from any dust. You could also protect valuable items that could be affected.

While there won’t be much dust produced, it’s something to consider, especially if you’re in the process of redecorating your home. If you’re planning on re-painting surfaces, you’ll want to ensure areas such as window ledges and skirting boards are free of dust. Dust will commonly collect in these areas, even without floor sanding, so make sure to check! It’s relatively easy to remove dust from these surfaces, with a feather duster or cloth.

Plan your timeline

Having your floor sanded and refinished can interfere with your routine, especially if it’s in a room you commonly use such as a living room or kitchen. This is why it’s important to plan your timeline to minimise the impact on you and your family. At RYANS, the process of floor sanding can take as little as three days to complete. This process could be longer with particularly large rooms or multiple floors.

The weather conditions can also have an impact on floor sanding, so you might want to plan it during a time when there is low humidity. Good weather for ventilation will also help to dry the lacquer more quickly.

Please bear in mind that you will have to move your furniture out of the room, and won’t have access to it for 3-5 days, while the lacquer dries. The lacquer should be completely dry before you move your furniture back into the room, otherwise, this could damage the floor.
