If you live in a house built here between about 1950 and 1970 there is a fair chance there is parquet under your carpet, and a fair chance you do not know it. The new town programme used wood block flooring extensively — in houses, schools, community halls and offices — usually oak or occasionally beech, laid in herringbone or brick pattern over a concrete screed with bitumen adhesive.

Sixty years on, most of it is still there, and most of it is restorable. Blocks work loose, a few go missing near doorways, and decades of carpet gripper have chewed the perimeter. All of that is fixable. We re-lay loose blocks, source matching replacements, and sand across several directions because the grain runs differently in every block.

The bitumen underneath needs respect. It softens with heat, clogs abrasives and stains anything it touches, so it gets worked carefully rather than forced. A parquet floor restored properly is far and away the best floor most Hemel houses will ever have.

The Old Town and Period Boards

Up in the Old Town and in the older properties around Boxmoor the picture is different — baltic redwood and pitch pine boards over joists, often with substantial gaps and a fair bit of Victorian repair work underneath.

These floors usually come with history you can read. Patches where a fireplace was moved, boards cut and badly refitted after plumbing went in during the 1960s, and the inevitable dark border where carpet stopped short of the skirting.

We repair rather than replace wherever we can, matching reclaimed timber of the right age and species so the fix disappears once the floor is sanded and finished. Replacing a Victorian board with new softwood is quick, cheap and always visible afterwards.

Chalk, Hard Water and What It Does to a Finish

Dacorum sits on chalk and the water here is properly hard. On floors that shows up in two ways. Around kitchens, bathrooms and back doors you get mineral rings where splashed water has evaporated and left its dissolved minerals behind, etching gradually into the finish. And on floors mopped regularly with tap water, a fine limescale film builds up that dulls the surface faster than foot traffic does.

The dulling is easily dealt with — a proper clean and a machine buff lifts it straight off, and that is often all a Hemel floor needs rather than a full sand.

Preventing it is mostly about habits: mop barely damp rather than wet, use a pH-neutral wood floor cleaner rather than washing-up liquid, and never a steam mop. Steam drives moisture straight through the finish into the boards.
