Floor Sanding FAQ for Ryans Restoration

What is floor sanding?

Floor sanding is the process of removing the top surface of a wooden floor using specialised equipment. This process eliminates scratches, dents, and stains, revealing fresh wood underneath. The sanded floor is then ready for refinishing, which may include staining, sealing, or polishing.

Why should I sand my wooden floors?

Sanding your wooden floors restores their appearance, removes signs of wear and tear, and extends the life of the wood. It’s also a great way to change the look of your floor by applying a different stain or finish. Sanding can increase the durability of your floors and make them easier to maintain in the long run.

How often should I sand my floors?

The frequency of floor sanding depends on the level of foot traffic and the overall condition of the floor. Typically, floors should be sanded every 8-10 years in a residential setting. For commercial properties or high-traffic areas, sanding may be needed more frequently, every 4-5 years.

Can I sand my floors myself?

While there are DIY floor sanding kits available, sanding requires a great deal of skill and the right equipment to achieve a smooth, even finish. Improper sanding can damage your floor, leading to costly repairs. Hiring professionals like Ryans Restoration ensures a high-quality, long-lasting result with minimal risk to your floors.

How much dust is produced during floor sanding?

At Ryans Restoration, we use modern sanding equipment with built-in dust extraction systems to minimise the amount of dust created during the process. While no system is completely dust-free, our equipment ensures that your home or business remains as clean as possible during sanding.

How long does the floor sanding process take?

The time it takes to sand a floor depends on the size of the area and the condition of the floor. On average, floor sanding can take between 1-3 days for a residential home, including time for preparation and finishing. Large or more damaged floors may take longer.

Do I need to move my furniture before floor sanding?

Yes, all furniture, rugs, and other items should be removed from the room before the floor sanding process begins. This allows our team to work efficiently and ensures that no damage occurs to your belongings.

Will floor sanding remove all scratches and stains?

Floor sanding will remove most surface-level scratches and stains. However, if the damage is very deep or if the stains have penetrated deep into the wood, they may not be completely removed. In such cases, we will advise on the best way to repair or restore your floor.

Can all types of wooden floors be sanded?

Most solid hardwood floors can be sanded multiple times, depending on the thickness of the wood. Engineered wood floors can also be sanded, but the top layer of wood must be thick enough to withstand the sanding process. Laminate floors, however, cannot be sanded.

Can I change the colour of my floor after sanding?

Yes, after sanding, you can change the colour of your floor by applying a stain. We offer a variety of staining options to help you achieve the look you want, whether you prefer a natural wood tone or something darker and more dramatic.

How soon can I walk on the floor after sanding and finishing?

Once the floor has been sanded and finished, it’s essential to allow time for the finish to dry completely. Typically, you can walk on the floor in socks or soft shoes after 24 hours, but we recommend waiting 48-72 hours before placing furniture back in the room to ensure the finish cures fully.

How do I care for my floors after sanding and refinishing?

After your floors are sanded and refinished, regular cleaning and maintenance are essential to keep them looking their best. Use a soft broom or vacuum with a brush attachment to remove dirt and avoid harsh chemicals. Using mats and rugs in high-traffic areas can help reduce wear and tear on your floors.

Is it noisy to sand a floor?

Yes, floor sanding can be a noisy process due to the machinery involved. However, we strive to complete the job efficiently and with as little disruption as possible. If noise is a concern, we can schedule the work at a time that is most convenient for you.

What types of finishes can be applied after floor sanding?

There are several finishes that can be applied after floor sanding, including water-based polyurethane, oil-based polyurethane, and natural oil finishes. Each finish offers different levels of durability, sheen, and aesthetic appeal. Our team can help you choose the best option based on your preferences and the type of wood.

How much does floor sanding cost?

The cost of floor sanding depends on several factors, including the size of the area, the condition of the floor, and the type of finish you choose. At Ryans Restoration, we provide a detailed quote after assessing your floor, ensuring transparency and no hidden fees. We pride ourselves on offering competitive rates without compromising on quality.
