Professional Parquet Floor Sanding by Ryans Restoration

At Ryans Restoration, we specialise in restoring the beauty and elegance of parquet flooring through expert parquet floor sanding. Parquet floors are known for their intricate patterns and timeless appeal, but over time, they can lose their lustre due to foot traffic, dirt, and general wear and tear. Sanding parquet floors is a delicate process that requires skill and attention to detail to ensure the preservation of the wood’s unique pattern while restoring its original beauty. Whether your parquet floor has become dull, scratched, or uneven, our professional sanding services can help bring it back to life.

Recent parquet projects include a worn parquet floor sanded and sealed in a Paignton home and the lifting, relaying and refinishing of the parquet at St Michael & All Angels Church, Lyndhurst.

Why Parquet Floor Sanding is Important

Parquet flooring, with its intricate designs and geometric patterns, adds character and sophistication to any home or business. However, parquet floors are also susceptible to the same wear and damage as any other wooden floor. Over time, the surface can become scratched, discoloured, and dull from daily use, reducing the impact of the floor’s visual appeal.

Sanding parquet floors is essential to restoring their original beauty and prolonging their lifespan. By removing the top layer of wood, sanding eliminates surface imperfections, scratches, stains, and old finishes, leaving a smooth, even surface that highlights the intricate details of the parquet pattern. Once sanded, the floor can be refinished to protect it from future wear and enhance its natural colour and grain.

Because parquet floors consist of small wooden blocks arranged in specific patterns, sanding them requires a skilled hand to ensure that the blocks remain even and that the pattern is preserved. At Ryans Restoration, we use specialised techniques and equipment designed specifically for parquet floors, ensuring a flawless result every time.

The Benefits of Professional Parquet Floor Sanding

There are many benefits to having your parquet floor professionally sanded, beyond simply improving its appearance. One of the primary benefits is that sanding extends the lifespan of your parquet floor. By removing the damaged top layer and refinishing the wood, you protect the underlying structure from further wear, preventing the need for costly repairs or replacement.

Sanding also enhances the overall look of your parquet floor. Years of wear can cause parquet to lose its vibrancy, but sanding removes any dullness, revealing the natural beauty of the wood. The sanding process helps bring out the grain and colour of the wood, making the intricate pattern of the parquet stand out.

In addition to aesthetic improvements, sanding makes your parquet floor easier to clean and maintain. A freshly sanded and refinished floor provides a smooth, sealed surface that resists dirt, dust, and spills, reducing the amount of maintenance required to keep it looking its best.

Finally, restoring your parquet floor through sanding can significantly increase the value of your property. Well-maintained parquet flooring is a highly desirable feature, and investing in its restoration can add to the overall aesthetic and financial value of your home or business.

Our Parquet Floor Sanding Process

At Ryans Restoration, we take great care in ensuring that every parquet floor we sand is treated with the utmost precision and attention to detail. Our team of professionals is trained to handle the complexities of sanding parquet floors, ensuring that the final result is smooth, even, and flawless.

The first step in the process is to thoroughly inspect your parquet floor to assess its condition. We look for signs of damage, such as deep scratches, uneven surfaces, or loose blocks, and determine the best approach for sanding and restoring the floor.

Once the inspection is complete, we begin the sanding process. Using professional-grade equipment specifically designed for parquet floors, we carefully sand the surface of the wood, removing the top layer of the old finish and any surface-level damage. We start with a coarse grit to remove deeper imperfections, then gradually move to finer grits to achieve a smooth, even finish.

The key to successful parquet floor sanding is maintaining the integrity of the intricate patterns. Our team is highly skilled in ensuring that the parquet blocks remain level and aligned throughout the sanding process. We take special care to work with the grain of the wood, preserving the unique design of the parquet while creating a smooth surface.

After the sanding is complete, we clean the floor to remove any dust or debris, ensuring a pristine surface for the next step: refinishing. Depending on your preferences, we can apply a stain to change or enhance the colour of the wood, followed by a protective sealant such as polyurethane or natural oil. This final layer not only protects the wood from future wear but also enhances its natural beauty, giving your parquet floor a long-lasting, polished appearance.

Parquet Floor Repairs

Most parquet floors need some repair before they are sanded, and in older floors it is often the bigger part of the job. The usual culprit is the original bitumen adhesive, which dries out and lets go over the decades. Blocks start to rock or click underfoot, gaps open along the joints, and eventually blocks lift or go missing altogether, often near doorways, radiators and fireplaces.

We tap the whole floor to find hollow areas, lift any loose blocks, scrape off the old bitumen and re-bond them with a modern adhesive. Missing or broken blocks are replaced from our stock of reclaimed parquet, matched for species, size and colour so the repair blends in once the floor is sanded. Where a section has failed completely, it can be lifted, the subfloor made good and the blocks relaid in their original pattern, as we did for the church parquet at Lyndhurst.

Other common repairs include water-damaged blocks near kitchens and bathrooms, burns, deep gouges, and patches left where walls, fireplaces or pipes have been removed. Herringbone and other patterns are continued across repaired areas so the floor reads as one surface.

Repairs are included in the written quotation, so you know the full cost before work starts. For finished examples, see our parquet sand and seal in Paignton and the before and after gallery. For board floors rather than blocks, see wooden floor repairs.

Custom Finishing Options

At Ryans Restoration, we offer a range of custom finishing options to suit your style and the specific needs of your parquet floor. Whether you prefer a natural matte finish, a satin sheen, or a high-gloss look, we can provide the perfect finish to complement your space. We also offer various stain options to enhance the wood’s natural colour or create a completely new look.

In addition to traditional finishes, we also offer eco-friendly options for clients who prefer sustainable solutions. Our natural oil finishes provide a beautiful, long-lasting finish that nourishes the wood without the use of harsh chemicals, making them an excellent choice for environmentally conscious homeowners.

Sanding Parquet Flooring: Blocks, Bitumen and Repairs

Sanding parquet flooring is its own discipline. A block floor has grain running in two directions, so it is sanded on the diagonal first and finished along the light, with machines that cut flat rather than following the hollows. Rush that and you get waves you can see from the doorway every time the sun comes through.

The other half of the job happens before any sanding starts. Most parquet from the thirties to the sixties was bedded in bitumen, and bitumen dries out. Blocks lift, rock and drum underfoot. Parquet repair means lifting every loose block, scraping the backs clean, re-bonding them with modern adhesive, and piecing in missing blocks from our reclaimed stock so the timber and wear match — new blocks in an old floor shout at you once the seal goes on. Only when the whole field is tight does the sanding begin. It is slower than plank work and priced accordingly, and the result is the best floor in the house.

FAQ: Parquet Floor Sanding

What is parquet floor sanding?

Parquet floor sanding is the process of removing the top layer of your parquet flooring to eliminate scratches, dents, stains, and old finishes. The sanding reveals fresh wood underneath and prepares the floor for refinishing, restoring its natural beauty and protecting it from further damage.

Why should I sand my parquet floors?

Sanding parquet floors removes surface-level imperfections like scratches, scuffs, and dullness, making them look new again. It also allows you to apply a fresh finish that protects the wood from wear and tear, extending the lifespan of your floors while maintaining their elegance.

Can all types of parquet floors be sanded?

Most solid wood parquet floors can be sanded, as well as some engineered wood parquet floors, depending on the thickness of the top layer. If the parquet has been sanded multiple times in the past, it may not have enough thickness left for further sanding. We will assess the condition of your parquet floor during our initial consultation.

Can you repair loose or missing parquet blocks?

Yes. Loose blocks are lifted, cleaned of old bitumen and re-bonded, and missing or broken ones are replaced with reclaimed blocks matched for species, size and colour. The repairs are then sanded and finished with the rest of the floor so they blend in.

Will sanding parquet floors damage the pattern?

No, when done professionally, sanding will not damage the intricate pattern of your parquet floor. At Ryans Restoration, we use specialised equipment and techniques to ensure that the pattern remains intact and that the blocks stay level throughout the sanding process.

How long does the parquet floor sanding process take?

The time required for parquet floor sanding depends on the size of the area and the condition of the floor. Typically, the process takes 1 to 3 days, including sanding, cleaning, and applying a new finish. Larger areas or floors with significant damage may take longer.

Does parquet floor sanding create a lot of dust?

Sanding does produce dust, but at Ryans Restoration, we use modern, dust-free sanding equipment with powerful extraction systems to minimise the amount of dust. This ensures that your home stays as clean as possible throughout the process.

Can I change the colour of my parquet floor after sanding?

Yes, after sanding, you can choose to stain your parquet floor in a different colour. Whether you want to lighten or darken the wood, staining allows you to customise the appearance of your floor. After staining, we apply a protective sealant to enhance and preserve the new colour.

How often should parquet floors be sanded?

Parquet floors generally only need to be sanded every 10 to 15 years, depending on the level of wear and traffic. In high-traffic areas, sanding may be required more frequently to maintain the floor’s appearance and durability.

What kind of finish should I use on my parquet floors after sanding?

After sanding, you can choose from a variety of finishes, including polyurethane (both water-based and oil-based), natural oil, or wax finishes. Polyurethane offers strong protection, while oil-based finishes give a natural, matte look. We can recommend the best finish based on your preferences and the floor’s usage.

How long should I wait before walking on the floor after sanding and refinishing?

After sanding and applying a finish, we recommend waiting at least 24 hours before walking on the floor in light footwear. For heavier foot traffic or placing furniture back on the floor, it’s best to wait 48 to 72 hours to allow the finish to cure completely.

Can parquet floors with deep scratches or damage be restored through sanding?

Yes, sanding can remove most surface scratches and imperfections. However, if the scratches are very deep or if the floor has significant damage, additional repairs may be required. We will assess the condition of the floor and recommend the best approach to restore it.

How much does parquet floor sanding cost?

The cost of parquet floor sanding varies depending on the size of the area, the condition of the floor, and the finish you choose. We provide a detailed estimate after inspecting your floor and discussing your preferences.

Is parquet floor sanding eco-friendly?

Yes, sanding parquet floors is an eco-friendly way to restore your existing wood floor rather than replacing it. Additionally, we offer natural, non-toxic finishing products such as natural oils, which are environmentally friendly and safe for your home.

Will sanding parquet floors eliminate creaks?

Sanding alone does not typically address creaking issues, as these are often caused by loose boards or the subfloor. However, during the restoration process, we can assess the cause of the creaks and recommend or perform repairs to reduce or eliminate them.
