Parquet takes noticeably longer than plain boards, and it is worth knowing why. Herringbone grain runs in two directions, so the early cuts are made at roughly 45 degrees to the pattern to avoid ripping across either set of blocks, with the final passes refining the surface once it is flat. The hundreds of small joints between blocks are then filled with a slurry of fine sanding dust and resin, worked across the whole floor, so the fill is made from the floor’s own timber and takes stain and seal the same way the blocks do.

Staining, Sealing, Oiling and Waxing

The finish decides how a floor looks and how it wears. Hard wax oil cures more slowly still, yet repays it later because worn patches can be revived locally without redoing the room. Sheen is the other decision: matt hides small scratches and dust, gloss shows every mark but suits formal rooms, and satin sits usefully between the two. We keep rooms ventilated during coating and are clear about the difference between dry to walk on and fully cured.

Aftercare is mostly about what not to do. Steam mops and supermarket sprays containing silicone are the two things that reliably ruin a sealed floor; a barely damp mop and a cleaner made for the finish you have is all it needs. Felt pads under chair legs and a decent doormat at each outside door prevent the majority of the wear we are called out to fix.
