Chalk Downland Water and Its Effects

Guildford sits in chalk country and the water is among the hardest in the country. On floors this produces two distinct problems.

The first is mineral marking. Water splashed by a sink, a back door or a radiator evaporates and leaves its dissolved minerals behind as a pale ring, which slowly etches into the finish. Caught early it buffs out. Left for years it becomes part of the surface.

The second is dulling. Floors mopped with tap water accumulate a fine limescale film that scatters light and makes the whole floor look tired well before the finish has actually worn. This one is good news, because a proper clean and a machine buff usually restores it for a fraction of what a sand would cost.

Our advice locally is simple: a barely damp mop, a pH-neutral wood cleaner rather than tap water alone, and never a steam mop.

Larger Houses and Phased Work
