Application has its own craft beyond the choice of product. The first coat of a water-based lacquer lifts the wood fibres slightly, so the floor is de-nibbed, given a light rub with a fine abrasive, before the next coat goes on, which is why a properly applied finish feels glassy rather than furry. Oak carries tannins that can react with some products, so on oak we use the appropriate base coat to keep the colour even. None of this shows in a photograph of a finished floor, and all of it shows within a year on a floor where it was skipped.
