St Ives is a granite fishing town that became an artists colony and then a holiday town, and every layer is still visible in the buildings. Tightly packed cottages in Downalong with rooms you can cross in four paces, Victorian and Edwardian houses climbing the hill towards Talland and Ayr, and a scattering of modern property out towards Carbis Bay.

Downalong is where the interesting floors are. Wide pine and elm, laid straight onto sleeper walls or sometimes onto the granite itself, worn hollow in the middle of a room by two centuries of use.

The single most important thing about a Downalong cottage floor is how little timber is left. Two hundred years of scrubbing and wear, plus a sanding in the eighties when everybody stripped everything, and there may be very little above the nail heads.

We measure before we quote. If there is enough to work with we take off the absolute minimum, using finer grits and more passes rather than an aggressive first cut. If there is not, we say so and talk about the alternatives, which is usually a screen and recoat that refreshes the finish without touching the timber.

Plenty of these cottages are listed or sit in the conservation area. Refinishing an existing floor is normally acceptable, but lifting or replacing historic boards can need consent from Cornwall Council. Ask before starting rather than after.

Salt Air, Sand and Sea Mist

St Ives is surrounded by water on three sides and the humidity rarely drops. Add sand tracked in from Porthmeor and Porthminster and you have the two things that destroy floor finishes fastest.
