Valleys Terraces and Miners Cottages

The valleys housing is unlike anything else in Britain. Long terraces climbing the hillsides, built quickly for colliery workers between about 1870 and 1910, usually with narrow pine boards over shallow joists and very little clearance beneath.

Those boards are thinner than the equivalent in a Cardiff merchant terrace, and a good number have already been sanded once. We measure remaining thickness before committing rather than starting and discovering the problem halfway through. Where a floor has had its last sand we will say so and recommend a screen and recoat, which removes no timber at all and costs around a third as much.

What valleys floors do have is character worth keeping. Once the tack holes and the dark carpet border are dealt with and a sensible finish goes on, they are honest, handsome floors that suit the houses they sit in.

Chapels, Halls and Pitch Pine

South Wales has more chapels per square mile than almost anywhere, and a great many of them still have their original pitch pine floors — large, heavily worn, and often the responsibility of a committee working to a tight budget.

Pitch pine is dense and resinous. It clogs abrasives faster than any other timber we work with, which means more time and more consumables, and any quote that does not account for that will change halfway through the job. Ours does not.

These floors also tend to have particular problems: pew bolt holes, heavy wear down the aisles and almost none under the seating, and often decades of polish build-up that has to come off before anything else happens. We are used to walking a committee through where the money is best spent and what can honestly wait another year.

Welsh Rain and Underfloor Damp

South Wales is genuinely wet, and it shows up in floors more than in most of England. Add valley bottoms where cold air and water collect, terraces built into steep hillsides with earth against the uphill wall, and a housing stock largely predating damp proof courses, and cupping is the single most common problem we see here.

Cupping is boards curving upward at the edges so the floor reads as a series of shallow ridges underfoot. It is almost always ventilation rather than a leak — airbricks rendered over during a re-point, ground levels raised by a patio, or a rear extension sealing off airflow to one side of the house.

Sanding a cupped floor flat while it is still holding moisture ruins it. The boards flatten as they dry and every one is left thin down the middle, and that cannot be undone. We take moisture readings before quoting, and where they are high the honest advice is to sort the ventilation first and call us back in a couple of months.

The three cities each bring something different. Cardiff has the best domestic floors in Wales — wide Victorian pine in Pontcanna, Canton and Roath, and a great deal of parquet, which is some of our strongest work. Swansea has the Uplands and Sketty villas plus a post-war rebuilt centre. Newport has solid Victorian terraces around Maindee and Stow Hill and a lot of industrial conversion work.
